Two local residents were recently arrested after a child in their care tested positive for exposure to methamphetamine and marijuana. According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Payton Joseph Raymond, 23, of Flint, and Haley Reed, 19, of Jacksonville, were taken into custody and charged with a state felony of Endangering a Child, and had bonds set at $100,000 each. more
The suspect accused of kidnapping and murdering a 10-year-old Tyler girl in Bullard last November is scheduled to appear in a Smith County courtroom for a pre-trial hearing this week. Gustavo Zavala-Garcia is slated to appear in a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 14, inside the courtroom of the 241st District Court of Judge Jack Skeen Jr. more

In a press release sent out to local media outlets dated Monday, Dec. 4, Cherokee County Commissioner Byron Underwood announced his intentions to seek election as County Judge of Cherokee County in 2018. Underwood, who has served on the Commissioners Court for the past 11 years, will be on the ballot in the Republican Primary in March. Since 2007, he has represented the residents of Precinct Four as County Commissioner. more
