The Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office remains on the scene Monday morning of a structure fire that damaged one business and completely destroyed another in the southwest part of the county. Smith County Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson said her office was dispatched at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, November 5, to CubeSmart Self Storage, at 12324 Highway 155 South. more

United States Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX 5th District), who represents Cherokee County in the U.S. House of Representatives, announced his intentions last week to not seek re-election. “Today I am announcing that I will not seek reelection to the US Congress in 2018,” Hensarling told supporters in a statement posted to his Congressional website dated Tuesday, Oct. 31. “Although service in Congress remains the greatest privilege of my life, I never intended to make it a lifetime commitment, and I have already stayed far longer than I had originally planned.” more
Smith County’s Precinct 1 Constable began serving a six-month sentence in federal prison last week after pleading guilty to four counts of willfully failing to pay his federal income taxes in September. Constable Henry Jackson began serving his term at the Seagoville Unit near Dallas on Friday, Oct. 27. After his release, he will be subject to an additional year of probation. more
