The Smith County Commissioners Court on Tuesday voted to approve the sale of road bonds at a lower-than-expected interest rate after receiving a dozen competitive bids. In November, Smith County voters approved a $39.5 million bond package to improve county roads. more

Smith County voters recently had an opportunity to visit the Elections office, while members of the media, as well as election workers, city secretaries for Tyler and Bullard, representatives from Tyler Independent School District, UT Tyler, the Democratic and Republican Parties, and Lighthouse for the Blind, attended a recent demonstration of the new voter machines and learned how they work. more
The late Smith County Fire Marshal Jim Seaton was posthumously inducted into the Texas Division of Emergency Management Hall of Fame on Tuesday, May 15. The award was accepted by his widow, Nancy Seaton; his daughter, Melissa Seaton; and Smith County Fire Marshal/Emergency Management Coordinator Connie McCoy-Wasson, during the Texas Division of Emergency Management Conference in San Antonio. more
Charities in East Texas benefited from the generosity of more than 2,475 donors during East Texas Giving Day, the region’s day of giving to support local nonprofits. The online fundraising effort began at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24th, and ended at midnight. Based on preliminary results, donors contributed $755,428 to support the causes they care about in 32 East Texas counties in the 18-hour fundraising period. more
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced recently that he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts a total of $861 million in local sales tax allocations for the month of May. The report released by the Texas Comptroller’s office stated the figures released for May represent a 9.4 percent increase from the amount released statewide in May 2017. more
