The Smith County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, voted unanimously to adopt the county’s budget and tax rate for the 2018 fiscal year. According to Smith County Commissioners Court Public Information Officer Casey Murphy, officials have been working all year on the FY 2018 budget, which reflects the county’s priorities, including road improvements, increased funding for law enforcement and jail operations, improved operational efficiency, continued improvement to facilities and technology, and hiring and retaining qualified employees who are providing the highest level of service to the citizens of Smith County. more
Officials with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice were able to locate and capture an escaped inmate last week. In an emailed press release to local media, TDCJ confirmed an inmate, identified as Aaron Ray Williams, 35, escaped from authorities by scaling a fence and running away from the Skyview Unit in Rusk on Sunday, Aug. 27. more
In the afternoon hours on Thursday, August 24, officers with the United States Marshal’s Service arrested Gary McGill, a white male, 69 years of age of Smith County, on charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault of an Elderly/Disabled Person. The charges against McGill stem from an incident in September of 2016 in which McGill is accused of sexual assault of a female that suffers from intellectual disabilities. more
A member of the Smith County Sheriff’s Department is being praised as a hero after his efforts to rescue a child from a drowning situation recently in Flint. At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, Smith County deputies were dispatched to the 14000 block of CR 195 in Flint in reference to a possible drowning of a child that had just occurred. more
