Longtime Smith County Extension Agent Chad Gulley has retired after more than 17 years of service. Gulley has served as the County Extension Agent - Agriculture and Natural Resources - for Smith County since 2011. He has also served the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services in Polk and Nacogdoches, for a total of more than 17 years. more
A total of three people were arrested last week and booked into the Smith County Jail after a pursuit escaladed into an incident with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. On October 12, 2017 a Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety - Highway Patrol attempted to stop a 2008 Ford Raptor pickup for speeding in southeastern Smith County. more

A pre-trial hearing for the murder trial for the suspect accused of kidnapping and murdering a Tyler girl in Bullard last November was delayed last week. Originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 5, a pre-trial hearing for Gustavo Zavala-Garcia, who was arrested in November 2016 and charged with capital murder in the disappearance and death of 10-year-old Kayla Gomez-Orozco of Tyler, was pushed back and is now scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 12. more
A local high school senior is looking to help young girls throughout the area look and feel beautiful with her own nonprofit organization. Lauren Bright, a senior at The Brook Hill School, is looking to help teenage girls fight off labels often associated by attending middle school and high school by equipping them with confidence through her nonprofit organization, Lauren’s Kloset. more

The Bullard Area Chamber of Commerce has opened its annual patriotic scholarship essay competition and is now seeking entries. The application process for the 2017 BACC Red, White, and Blue Patriotism Essay Competition began last month. The purpose of the competition is to honor American veterans and the sacrifices they have made to ensure freedom. more
