Today the word “state” dilutes to mean a subdivision of a nation. Originally, it meant something far different. When we hear Texans nostalgically gloating about our state’s right to secede (which we lost due to our participation in the Civil War) they are close to the original content of the word “state” since Texas was once an independent republic, or nation, as were all the newly independent colonies. more
