Retail stores throughout the East Texas area are preparing for the state's annual Sales Tax Holiday, held Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13. The holiday weekend, set by the Texas Legislature, allows consumers to purchase clothing, school supplies, and other items without having to pay the state sales tax. Consumers will save an average of $8.25 per every $100 spent. Sales of qualifying items will be exempt from sales tax on items costing up to $100, or the first $100 of the retail cost. more
The University of Texas at Tyler has named 570 students to the President’s Honor Roll for the 2017 spring semester, President Michael Tidwell announced. In order to qualify for the President’s Honor Roll at The University of Texas at Tyler, a student must have completed, in one semester, 12 or more semester hours of undergraduate college-level credit with a grade of “A” in all courses. more

The awards are rolling in for the Brook Hill Guard cheerleading squads, as the cheerleaders recently returned home from camp with several top recognitions. “We’re very excited about our squads going into next year,” said Tiffany Hubbard, Brook Hill cheer sponsor. “We have a total of eight seniors that we are expecting to serve as our leaders. Most of our cheerleaders have returned from last year, with the exception of one or two additions. They’re very excited to be here and are ready for football season.” more
After an intermission for the summer months, the Bullard Panther Marching Band is getting back together, as the organization prepares to host a number of summer band events for both incoming and returning members. “I’m extremely excited about the upcoming school year for the band,” said Gary Jordan, Bullard ISD Director of Bands. “We’re predicting to have around 180 members of the Panther Band this year, with roughly 60 of those being freshman band students. Even though it’s not a year to advance in UIL marching contest, we’re looking at performing at contests in Sunnyvale, Mineola, and Royse City, as well as performances at the State Fair of Texas, Disney World, and at halftime at a Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjack football game. more
Donald Love, a Bullard High School graduate, is an avid dancer, and will soon have the opportunity to dance on one of the world’s biggest stages once again. Love was recently selected as one of 18 young dancers on the 2017-2018 Dallas Cowboys Rhythm and Blue hip-hop dance team, his second consecutive year to claim a roster spot on the squad. more
