Big bats allow Lady Panthers to claim district victories against Gilmer, Chapel Hill

The Bullard Lady Panther varsity softball team made their way back into district play last week, as the team hosted a district showcase against the Gilmer Lady Buckeyes Tuesday, April 3, at Bullard High School.

After a stalemated first inning of play, the home team Bullard was able to take an early lead in the contest, scoring on run in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Panthers also found their way across home plate in their share of the fourth inning, scoring one run.

The offensive successes for Bullard continued late in the contest, as two Lady Panther runners prowled their way around the bases and scored in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Thanks to a stellar defensive effort by Bullard, the home team was able to keep the bats of the visiting Gilmer squad silent throughout the contest, as the Lady Panthers claimed the district win with a shut-out victory over the Lady Buckeyes, 4-0.

Bullard held the advantage at the plate in the hit column, collecting a total of four hits, while limiting Gilmer to just two hits. Both teams were charged with one fielding error in the contest.

Leading the prowl for the Lady Panthers at the plate against the Lady Buckeyes was Claire Cannon, turning in a 1-3 performance with a total of two runs batted in.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Gilmer included Destinee Dixon, going 0-2 with one RBI; Payton Hancock, going 2-3; and Ashlyn Seaton, going 1-3.

Ariel Matula was credited with the win for the Lady Panthers in the circle against the Lady Buckeyes, allowing two hits and no runs, while striking out 10 and walking two, in seven innings of play.

Continuing their journey through district last week, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity softball team traveled the short distance to Tyler for a district battle against the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs Friday, April 6, at Chapel Hill High School.

The big bats were working early for Bullard against Chapel Hill, collecting a total of seven runs in the top of the first inning, while the Lady Bulldogs scored one run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

Bullard continued their success at the plate in the top of the second inning, scoring three additional runs.

The Lady Panthers ferociously attacked the Lady Bulldogs for seven more runs in the top of the third inning, as well as four runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Backed by a strong performance in the circle, the bats of Chapel Hill were no match against the strong arm of Bullard’s pitching, as the Lady Panthers claimed the district win in a rout against Chapel Hill, 21-1, in five innings.

Aspyn Grossman served as the leader at the plate for Bullard against Chapel Hill, turning in a 3-3 performance, including a triple, with three RBIs and one stolen base.

Other significant contributors for the Lady Panthers against the Lady Bulldogs included Seaton, going 2-3, including a triple and a home run, with three RBIs and one stolen base; Cannon, going 0-4 with three RBIs and one stolen base; Reagan Bell, going 1-2, including a home run, with two RBIs; Hancock, going 2-4 with one RBI and one stolen base; Sydney Foster, going 2-3 with one RBI and one stolen base; Destinee Dixon, going 1-3, including a triple, with one RBI and one stolen base; Caitlyn Colston, going 1-2 with one RBI; and Gabby Nichols, going 1-3.

Seaton was named the winning pitcher in the circle for Bullard against Chapel Hill, allowing one hit and one run, while striking out six and walking two, in five innings of work.

With a record of 2-0 last week, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity softball team currently holds an overall record of 18-3-1, 6-0 in district play, on the 2017-2018 season.
