Brook Hill MS basketball teams claim TAPSAC District Championship titles

The Brook Hill eighth grade boys basketball team is not an ordinary group of young men.

In recent years, the team has dominated the Tyler Area Private Schools Athletic Conference in the sport of middle school boys basketball by winning the District Championship for three consecutive years.

As mostly sixth grade students, the group stepped up into the seventh grade division and won the title over district foes Tyler Grace Community, All Saints Episcopal, and Bishop T.K. Gorman for the 2014-2015 season.

Last season, the team of seventh graders went undefeated for the season with a record of 18-0, while going 8-0 in district play and winning the TAPSAC Championship.

This year, the Brook Hill eighth grade boys team posted a 16-2 overall record, went 8-0 in district play, while winning their third straight TAPSAC Championship. The team claimed the championship by downing Gorman, 45-17, in the semi-finals and tournament hosts All Saints by a margin of 39-28.

The eighth grade team, coached by Brook Hill Athletic Director Wally Dawkins, has posted a two year record of 34-2 and a district mark for the past three years of 23-1.

Members of the 2016-2017 Brook Hill eighth grade boys basketball team include Mason Barker, Lanye Barter, TyJuan Cannon, TyShaun Cannon, Conner Carson, Colby Davis, Boston Durrett, Chandler Fletcher, Riley Hill, Joseph Johnson, Carson Richards, William Roberts, and Bryce Schwab.

Dawkins, who was the Head Boys Basketball at Whitehouse from 1989-2008 before moving over to coach the Brook Hill Varsity Boys from 2008-2013, now coaches both the seventh and eighth grade boys teams at Brook Hill says this group has a lot of great qualities.

"They are very coachable while at the same time very talented" said Dawkins. "This group has size, shooters, ball handlers, and they are winners. We work a lot on fundamentals and things that I have been found to be important in developing good basketball players and this group has tremendous potential.”

Dawkins will continue working with both seventh and eighth grade teams, as the seventh grade team also won the TAPSAC District Championship this season, going 13-4 overall, 8-0 in district play.

Members of the 2016-2017 Brook Hill seventh grade boys basketball team include Brady Callens, Colton Carson, Cade Chesley, Von Dawson, Colin Dement, Tanner French, Grayden Goates, Noah Langemeier, and Grayson Murrey.
