Bullard track teams prepare to take on competition at Area meet Thursday


After a week to rest and prepare, several members of the Bullard Panther and Lady Panther track and field teams will be taking on the competition from around the East Texas area this week.

Thanks to their strong finishes at the District 15-4A track meet on Wednesday and Thursday, April 4-5 at Spring Hill High School, the teams will travel to compete at the UIL Class 4A Area 15/16 Track Meet, scheduled for Thursday, April 19, at Carthage High School.

Bullard Panthers:

In the 400 meter dash race, the Panthers will be represented by Zach Vanwinkle, who advanced to the finals at the district meet, claiming fourth place with a time of 52.79.

Harrison Meador will take to the track for the team in the 800 meter run after securing a second place finish with a time of 2:08.83 at the District meet.

In the 1,600 meter run, Bullard’s Hayden Jeffus will look to finish strong after placing third in the District event with a time of 4:54.93.

Jeffus will also use his quick running ability to compete for the Panthers in the 3,200 meter run after advancing thanks to his first place finish and District Championship with a time of 10:37.

The Panthers’ 4X400 meter relay team, consisting of Rosario Jimenez, Christian Johnson, Will McCowin, and Vanwinkle finished the District race with a fourth place finish with a time of 3:38.41, allowing the team to advance to Area.

McCowin will look to defend a total of three District Championship earned in field events recently, as he will compete at Area in the high jump, triple jump, and long jump events. He finished in first place in high jump by leaping over the bar at a height of 6’-0”, as well as first place in triple jump with a jump of 44’-2 ½” and first place in long jump with a strong leap of 22’-3 ¼”.

In the discus throw, Kele Leachman will step up and represent Bullard thanks to his fourth place finish at District with a toss of 131’-2 ½”.

Allan Covey will be the lone Panther athlete to compete for the team at the Area meet in the pole vault contest. He finished the District meet in third place with a vault of 12’-0”.

Bullard Lady Panthers:

Emily Berry will represent the Lady Panthers in a total of three long distance events at the upcoming Area track meet. She took home a third place finish in the 800 meter run contest with a time of 2:29.90, as well as third place in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:43.45 and fourth place in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 12:25.

In the girls hurdles races, Ashlyn Meador will compete at Area for Bullard thanks to third place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles events with times of 16.19 and 48.52, respectively.

Also racing their way to Area will be the 4X400 meter relay team that finished in second place at the District meet with a time of 4:23.65. Team members include Erin Berry, Sara McKeethan, Ashlyn Meador, and Abby Petty.

Ashley Waterman will be attending the Area meet thanks to her strong finish in the high jump competition at the District level, claiming first place and District Champion recognition with a leap of 5’-0”.

The final athlete to represent the Lady Panthers will be Macie Turrentine, who was able to punch her ticket to the Area meet after placing fourth at the District event with a vault of 8’-6”.
