Guard fall short in district matchup against Crusaders

The Brook Hill Guard varsity basketball team was back in district action last week, as the team traveled the short distance to Tyler for a showdown against the Bishop Gorman Crusaders Friday, Feb. 2, at Bishop Gorman High School.

In the first quarter, the home team Bishop Gorman was able to march their way ahead of the Guard with a strong offensive attack, as the Crusaders netted a total of 13 points, compared to the five points amassed by the Guard.

Both Brook Hill and Bishop Gorman continued their bout in the second quarter of play, with the teams being evenly matched up, scoring 10 points each. At the halftime intermission, the teams headed for the locker room with Bishop Gorman holding a 23-15 lead over Brook Hill.

After returning to the court for the second half of basketball action, the Guard and Crusaders were identical in their offensive production during the third quarter of play, with both teams collecting a total of 15 points.

In the fourth quarter, the visiting Guard attempted to mount a comeback attempt against the home team Crusaders, as Brook Hill outscored Bishop Gorman on the scoreboard, 21-16, in the final frame.

However, the late rally by the Guard fell short of achieving success, as the Crusaders held on to claim the district victory, 54-51.

Junior guard Jared Johnson was the leader in scoring in the Guard’s efforts against the Crusaders, collecting a total of 14 points in the contest.

Other significant contributors for Brook Hill against Bishop Gorman included senior guard Reid Hill, with 13 points, including two three-pointers; senior post Miguel Vega, with 10 points; freshman forward TyJuan Cannon, with four points; sophomore forward David Roberts, with four points; senior forward Campbell Fletcher, with three points; and freshman guard Carson Richards, with three points.

With the loss to the Bishop Gorman Crusaders, the Brook Hill Guard varsity basketball team currently stands with an overall record of 17-10, 3-2 in district play.

Next week: Tuesday, Feb. 6 – Brook Hill at Athens; Friday, Feb. 9 – Brook Hill at All Saints.
