All Saints Def. Brook Hill 25-16, 25-9, 25-17
The Brook Hill Lady Guard varsity volleyball team continued its march through the 2017 season last week, as the team hosted a district matchup Thursday, Oct. 5, against the Tyler All Saints Lady Trojans at Herrington SportsCenter.
In the first set, the Lady Guard and Lady Trojans fought hard against each other for control of the game's momentum early. The visiting All Saints squad brought their tricky offensive schemes with them on the road game, confusing the home team Brook Hill squad en route to claiming the first set win, 25-16.
The Lady Trojans' strong offensive power was on full display against the Lady Guard in the second frame of the district contest, overpowering the home team Brook Hill and reaching the 25-point mark for the second set victory, 25-9.
Attempting to avoid the three-set sweep, the home team Lady Guard looked to rebound and recover in the third set of play. Despite a valiant effort by Brook Hill, the All Saints squad remained in control, advancing to claim the match victory in three sets, 25-16, 25-9, 25-17.
Lady Guard senior setter/right side hitter Maddie Anthony provided the team with a well-rounded performance, contributing a total of 11 assists, 10 digs, one block, and one kill.
Other significant contributors for the Lady Guard against the Lady Trojans included senior outside hitter/right side hitter Bailea Mapes, with nine digs and two kills; freshman setter Emily Livesay, with six digs and one assist; sophomore middle blocker Katherine Mondrick, with five digs, four kills, three blocks, two assists, and one ace; junior libero Kaitlyn Juarez, with four digs and one ace; freshman outside hitter Mary Roberts, with four kills, three digs, and one block; senior setter/right side hitter Zoe Hayes, with three digs; and junior middle blocker Morgan Carpenter, with two kills and two blocks.
Cayuga def. Brook Hill 22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-11
In their second matchup of the week, the Lady Guard varsity volleyball team battled in a non-district bout against the Cayuga Lady Wildcats Saturday, Oct. 7, at Brook Hill's Herrington SportsCenter.
The Lady Guard and Lady Wildcats opened the non-district affair with a barrage of offensive attacks at each other, hoping to gain an advantage over their opponent. Late in the set, the home team Brook Hill created space on the scoreboard and marched their way to the first set win over Cayuga, 25-22.
In the second set of play, the Lady Wildcats used their sharp claws to scratch back at the Lady Guard, as the visiting Cayuga squad clawed their way past the home team Brook Hill to even the contest at one set each with a second set win, 25-17.
With the contest tied up at one set each, both teams looked to capitalize on advantages over their opponent. As the set developed, the Lady Guard and Lady Wildcats pushed the contest into extra points, with Cayuga jumping ahead of Brook Hill for the victory in the third set, 26-24.
Down 2-1 and hoping to hold back defeat, the Lady Guard used every weapon in their arsenal, both offensively and defensively, in an attempt to force a decisive fifth set. However, the visiting Lady Wildcats proved to be too much for the Lady Guard to handle, as Cayuga took the match's win in four sets over Brook Hill, 22-5, 25-17, 26-24, 25-11.
Yet again, Anthony served as a staple for the Lady Guard for the second consecutive contest, amassing a total of 18 digs, 18 assists, five kills, and one ace for the team against the Lady Wildcats.
Other significant contributors for the Lady Guard against the Lady Wildcats included Hayes, with 15 digs; Mondrick, with 15 digs, nine kills, two blocks, two assists, and two aces; Livesay, with 10 digs and 10 assists; Roberts, with 10 kills and six digs; freshman right side hitter Morgan Maddox, with five aces and four digs; Carpenter, with four kills, three blocks, and two digs; junior outside hitter Kasey Anderson, with four kills and three digs; Reed, with three digs and two kills; and Juarez, with three digs.
With an 0-2 record last week, the Brook Hill Lady Guard varsity volleyball team currently sits with an overall record of 6-15-1, 1-2 in district play.
