Lady Panthers advance to playoffs, claim Bi-District title over Carthage

The Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team prowled its way back into district play on the hardwood last week, as the team made the trip for a showdown against the Gladewater Lady Bears Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Gladewater High School.

In the first quarter, the Lady Panthers were able to begin the contest with strong offensive power, scoring a total of 15 points, compared to the Lady Bears’ two points in the opening quarter of play. 

The offensive abilities for the Lady Panthers continued to shine against the Lady Bears during the second quarter, as the visiting Bullard squad outscored the home team Gladewater, 14-2. At the halftime break, the Lady Panthers held a 29-7 lead over the Lady Bears. 

After returning to the court for the second half of action, the Lady Bears attempted to bite and claw their way back into the contest during the third quarter, but it was the Lady Panthers who continued to hold the advantage on the scoreboard, collecting a total of 15 points, compared to the Lady Bear’s 12 points. 

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers were able to put any possible comeback rally by the Lady Bears to rest, as Bullard outscored Gladewater, 13-10, en route to claiming the district victory, 57-29.

The Lady Panther duo of senior forward Hannah Lloyd and junior center Allie Kirgan were the team leaders in scoring in the district contest against the Lady Bears, both scoring 15 points. Lloyd also contributed two-three-pointers in the Lady Panthers’ winning efforts. 

Other significant scorers for the Lady Panthers against the Lady Bears included sophomore guard Sydney Foster, with 14 points, including two three-pointers; senior forward Lauren Zachry, with six points, including two three-pointers; senior guard Abby Ehrman, with three points; senior guard Abby Story, with two points; and senior center Chloe Ducote, with two points.

After claiming the final regular season district victory, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team began its push into the playoff picture, traveling the short distance to Whitehouse for the Bi-District playoff game against the Carthage Wildcats Monday, Feb. 13, at Whitehouse High School. 

In the first quarter, the Lady Panthers were on the prowl offensively, collecting a total of 21 points. Bullard’s defensive efforts also shined brightly in the opening quarter of play, limiting Carthage to just three points of offense. 

The Lady Panthers continued to capitalize on offensive opportunities during the second quarter of play against the Lady Bulldogs, as Bullard outscored Carthage, 22-6. At the halftime intermission, the teams headed into the locker rooms with Bullard holding a 43-9 advantage over Carthage. 

After returning to the court for the second half of play, the Lady Panthers continued to shoot lights out against the Lady Bulldogs in the third quarter, scoring a total of 29 points, compared to the nine points netted by the Lady Bulldogs. 

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs attempted to mount a comeback rally back into contention, outscoring the Lady Panthers, 20-8. However, the Lady Panthers were able to hold on to their early lead, claiming the Bi-District playoff victory over the Lady Bulldogs, 80-38. 

Lloyd was the sure shooter for the Lady Panthers in the Bi-District contest against the Lady Bulldogs, scoring a total of 29 points, including nine three-pointers. 

Other significant contributors for the Lady Panthers against the Lady Bulldogs included Kirgan, with 16 points; Story, with 10 points, including two three-pointers; Foster, with nine points; Zachry, with nine points, including three three-pointers; sophomore forward Ashlyn Meador, with five points; and freshman forward Erin Berry, with two points. 

With a 2-0 record last week, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team currently stands with an overall record of 29-6, 7-2 in district play. 

Next game: Area – Bullard vs. Texarkana Pleasant Grove Friday, Feb. 17 at Hallsville High School.
