McCowin’s hat-trick prowls Panther soccer to first win in program history

Bullard Panthers 2, Diboll Lumberjacks 3, FINAL

Back in action on the field of play last week was the Bullard Panther varsity soccer team, as the team hosted a battle against the Diboll Lumberjacks Monday, Feb. 5, at Bullard High School’s Panther Stadium.

In the first quarter of play, the teams from Diboll and Bullard were able to move the ball down field well, as the Lumberjacks and Panthers both claimed their stakes to two goals.

After coming back to the field for the second half of play, the Panthers prowled down the field and attempted to take control of the contest.

However, the Lumberjacks swung a big axe, attacking the Panthers and putting the ball into the net once in the second frame, as Diboll claimed the win over Bullard, 3-2.

For Bullard, both of the team’s goals in the contest against Diboll were credited to senior midfielder and captain Will McCowin, who had a total of four shots on goal. The Panthers also had one of the goals’ assists attributed to junior midfielder Bryan Gonzalez.

Panther players collecting shots on goal in the contest against the Lumberjacks included freshman midfielder Christian Moore, sophomore midfielder Christian Johnson, sophomore midfielder Arne Goetz, sophomore midfielder Jesus Oliveros, and junior midfielder Fabian Jimenez.

In the goal for Bullard, sophomore goalkeeper Pedro Rodriguez collected a total of three saves in the team’s efforts, while sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Carmichael also grabbed five saves.

Bullard Panthers 3, Palestine Wildcat (JV) 0, FINAL

After suffering the loss to the Diboll Lumberjacks, the Bullard Panther varsity soccer team traveled to take on the Palestine Wildcats’ junior varsity team Friday, Feb. 9, at Palestine High School.

The visiting Panthers were able to prowl their way through the Wildcats’ defensive schemes throughout the contest, netting a total of three goals, while Bullard’s defense stood strong, allowing no goals, as the Panthers claimed the win over the Wildcats, 3-0, the first win in program history for the Bullard boys soccer program.

Leading the victory run for the Panthers against the Wildcats’ junior varsity team was McCowin, collecting a total of three goals for this third hat-trick of the season. A total of two assists in the matchup were attributed to Moore.

Goalkeepers Carmichael and Rodriguez teamed up to provide a wall of defense in the goal for Bullard, stopping a total of three Wildcats shots each in the shutout effort.

“The boys have been training hard all season and it all came together last night,” said Darren Vossler, BHS boys soccer head coach. “As a coach, it’s great to see these young men, who some have never played before, learn how to play the game and get better each week. The boys will keep fighting hard each week and continue to get better and compete in UIL next season.”

Next week: Tuesday, Feb. 13 – Bullard at Mineola; Thursday, Feb. 15 – Bullard at John Tyler.
