Panther Band brings home 64 First Division medals from UIL contest

The Bullard High School Panther Band has hit a new high note of success in terms of student musicianship, as the band received a total of 64 First Division gold medals at the Region XXI UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest, held Saturday, Feb. 4, at Lindale High School.

“I am very proud of all these students that competed at Solo and Ensemble contest this year,” said Gary Jordan, Bullard ISD Director of Bands. “Studying and performing this literature that they do not see in the full band setting helps to make our band program better.

In all, the BHS Panther Band had 74 students participating at the Solo and Ensemble contest in various woodwind, brass and percussion solos and ensembles. The Panther Band received 18 Division I (Superior) ratings on their solos and 46 Division I (Superior) ratings on their ensembles, giving the Panther Band a total of 64 First Division gold medals at the UIL Regional Contest.

Now, the Panther Band will send a total of 55 students, including musicians and members of the band’s twirling line, to the upcoming Texas State UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Soloists receiving a First Division rating on their solo pieces at the annual Solo and Ensemble contest and advancing to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest included flute soloists Jara Galvan and Haylee Nish; clarinet soloist Meghan Brems; bassoon soloist Bailey Bower; alto saxophone soloist Meghan Bochow; tenor saxophone soloist Joseph Hudson; trumpet soloists Matthew Bradley, Chloe Duvak, Jacob Edwards, and Ethan Medley; trombone soloist Noah Grundy; euphonium soloists Emily Coyne, Patrick Granberry, and Adam Skanes; tuba soloist Vickie Kenock; and snare drum soloists Will Brown, Brandon Duecker, Austin Sleeman.

Additionally, members of the Bullard Panther Band Twirlers also received the opportunity to advance to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest, including Ally Wilcox, Meagan Hodge, Chloe Williams; Nish, Kassidy Robertson, Codie Lovelady and Hannah Reschke.

Also attending the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest will be the instrumentalists who were rewarded for their hard work and efforts with First Division ratings on their ensemble pieces at the Region XXI Solo and Ensemble Contest. Ensembles advancing to the State competition include the Flute Choir, including Whitney Buckley, Emily Ekins, Patience Evans, Katy Kuczkowski, Lexi Minick, and Grace Stanley; the Miscellaneous Woodwind Ensemble, including Lillian Bloxom, Bochow, Bower, Brems, Buckley, Nathan Burton, Makayla Dublin, Abigain Ehrman, Levi Ehrman, Emmalie Ellis, Kuczkowski, Megan McCoy, and Jenny Perez; the Euphonium Trio, including Granberry, Dillon Hooker, and Skanes; the Brass Quintet, including Bradley, Allison Carter, Duvak, Maddie Rogers, and Daniel Tubb; the Brass Quintet, Edward Jacobs, Colton Kelley, Audrey Dean, Isaac Sanders, and J.T. Tijerina; the Brass Sextet, including Carter, Janey Haley, Ashley Kethan, Jacob Lundgren, Medley, and Tubb; the Percussion Ensemble, including Brown, Emily Dean, Duecker, Caleigh Hiltz, Corey Johnson, Weston McCullough, Trey Red, and Hannah Stewart.

Additionally, the BHS Twirlers were able to advance as an ensemble to the UIL State Twirling Contest after receiving a First Division rating for their performance at the UIL Regional Twirling Contest in October.

Members of the BHS Twirlers’ ensemble advancing to the UIL State Twirling Contest include Wilcox, Mariah Fretwell, Hodge, Kaylee Homan, Williams, Bloxom, Nish, Robertson, Lovelady, and Reschke.

Jordan credited the support of the BHS Band Boosters, Bullard community, and Bullard ISD administration with the success of the Panther Band program at the Region XXI Solo and Ensemble contest.

“We thank the Bullard community for their overwhelming support of the band program all year long,” said Jordan. “Also, we thank the faculty, administration and staff of Bullard I.S.D. for their tremendous support of the Panther Bands. In addition, we give a special thanks to the Band Boosters and all band parents for their incredible commitment to the band program and each student. We know we could not be successful without all your support.”

The Texas State UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held on the campus of Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Texas on Monday, May 29.

The Bullard Panther Band is under the direction of Jordan and assisted by Samantha Clendenny, Chris Murray, and Cameron Warren.
