The Bullard Panther varsity basketball team continued district play last week, as the team loaded the bus and traveled to battle the Gladewater Bears Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Gladewater High School.
In the first quarter, the Panthers and the Bears scratched and clawed at each other in an attempt to control the game’s momentum, as Bullard collected a total of nine points, compared to Gladewater’s eight points.
The home team Bears’ offense came to life against the Panthers during the second quarter of play, as Gladewater outscored Bullard, 25-12, allowing the Bears to take a 33-21 advantage over the Panthers into the locker room at the halftime intermission.
After returning to the court for the second half of play, the Bears continued to capitalize on scoring opportunities against the Panthers in the third quarter, netting a total of 16 points, compared to the Panthers’ 11 points of offensive output.
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers and the Bears were able to battle hard offensively, but it was the home team Gladewater that was able to hold on, outscoring Bullard, 19-17, en route to claiming the district victory over the Panthers, 68-49.
Panther junior guard Will McCowin was the leading scorer for the Panthers in the district contest against the Bears, collecting a total of 12 points.
Other significant contributors for the Panthers against the Bears included senior power forward Austin Turgeau, with nine points; senior power forward Tyler Hinton, with nine points; junior shooting guard Jagger Haynie, with eight points; junior shooting guard Evan Hodges, with six points; junior shooting guard Chase Chewning, with three points; and junior shooting guard Jerrod Shrode, with two points.

After suffering the district defeat against the Gladewater Bears, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team returned to their home court for the annual Senior Night district contest against the Gilmer Buckeyes Friday, Feb. 10, at Panther Gym.
In the first quarter, the Panthers and Buckeyes wrestled for control of the game’s momentum, as the visitors from Gilmer collected a total of 16 points, compared to the 13 points netted by the home team Bullard.
The Buckeyes’ strong offensive power was too much for the Panthers to handle in the second quarter of play, as Gilmer outscored Bullard, 14-6. At the halftime break, the teams went inside the locker room with the Buckeyes holding a 30-19 lead over the Panthers.
After returning to the court for the second half of play, the Panthers prowled out of the locker room with strong offensive purpose, collecting a total of 20 points in the third quarter, compared to the Buckeyes’ 15 points of offensive production.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams battled hard to capture any type of advantage, but it was the Buckeyes who were able to hold on, outscoring Bullard, 19-17, en route to claiming the district victory against the Panthers, 64-56.
Turgeau served as the Panthers’ high scorer in the district battle against the Buckeyes, collecting a total of 16 points.
Other significant contributors for the Panthers against the Buckeyes included Hodges, with 15 points; McCowin, with 11 points; Shrode, with eight points; and senior power forward Austin Reeves, with two points.
With a 0-2 record in last week, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team currently stands with an overall record of 6-22, 0-9 in district play.
