Panthers prowl to sixth place at Edgewood tournament, improve to 3-6 overall record

Resuming their 2017-2018 schedule last week was the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team, as the team traveled the short distance to Troup to battle against the Troup Tigers Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Troup High School.

In the first quarter, the home team Troup was able to start the game off with a strong push offensively, as the Tigers took control of the contest’s momentum with 17 points, compared to the nine points collected by the Panthers.

Bullard prowled its way back in the contest during the second quarter of play, scratching and clawing its way to 19 points, while Troup netted 12 points. At the halftime break, the teams headed for the locker rooms with the Tigers holding a slim 29-28 lead over the Panthers.

After returning to the court for the second half of play, the Tigers went on a strong offensive run against the Panthers in the third quarter, as Troup outscored Bullard, 13-6.

In the fourth quarter, the home team Tigers’ ferocious offense was too much for the Panthers to overcome, as Troup netted 17 points, compared to Bullard’s nine points, as the Tigers claimed the victory over Bullard, 59-43.

Senior small forward Evan Hodges was the leader in scoring for the Panthers against the Tigers, collecting a total of 16 points in the contest.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Troup included junior shooting guard Hayden Wells, with six points, including two three-pointers; senior point guard Will McCowin, with six points; sophomore center Garrett Esposito, with four points; senior shooting guard Chase Chewning, with four points; senior shooting guard Jerrod Shrode, with three points; junior center Dustin Dover, with two points; and senior shooting guard Jagger Haynie, with two points.

After their battle against the Troup Tigers, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team loaded the bus and embarked on a journey to compete at the Edgewood Basketball Tournament, held Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 2, at Edgewood High School.

In the first round of the Edgewood Basketball Tournament Thursday, the Panthers were matched up against the home team, the Edgewood Bulldogs.

In the first quarter, the two teams jostled back-and-forth for control of the opening quarter’s flow of momentum, with the home team Bulldogs collecting 18 points, compared to the 11 points amassed by the Panthers.

Edgewood added to their lead over Bullard in the second quarter of play, as the Bulldogs outscored the Panthers, 17-11. At halftime, the teams headed for the locker rooms with Edgewood leading Bullard, 35-22.

After resuming basketball action in the second half of play, the two teams were almost equals during the third quarter of play, with Edgewood adding 12 points, compared to Bullard’s 10 points of offense.

In the fourth quarter, the offensive power of the Bulldogs was ferocious, as Edgewood bit at the Panther defense for 26 points, while limiting Bullard’s offense to just 14 points in the final frame, as the home team Edgewood claimed the victory over Bullard, 73-46.

Haynie’s offensive contribution was a key in the Panthers’ efforts against the Bulldogs, collecting a total of 14 points.

Other significant contributes for Bullard against Edgewood included McCowin, with eight points; Hodges, with seven points; Dover, with six points; Shrode, with six points; Esposito, with three points; and Chewning, with two points.

Bullard Panthers 51, Wills Point Tigers 45, FINAL

In the second matchup at the Edgewood Basketball Tournament Friday, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team was pitted against the Wills Point Tigers.

The Panthers were able to prowl ahead to an early lead in the first quarter of play, netting a total of 15 points, while the Tigers compiled nine points of opening quarter offense.

In the second quarter, the Panthers and Tigers were in an offensive catfight, as both teams fought to add points to their score. Bullard was able to outscore Wills Points, 15-13, allowing the Panthers to hold a 30-22 lead over the Tigers at halftime.

After returning to the court for the second half, the Tigers were able to start the third quarter with a strong offensive push of their own, amassing a total of 14 points, compared to the nine points added by the Panthers.

In the fourth quarter, Bullard regained control of the momentum, outscoring Wills Point, 12-9, en route to the Panthers claiming the win over the Tigers, 51-45.

Hodges was the leader in scoring for the Panthers in their matchup against the Tigers, prowling his team to the victory with 10 points.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Wills Point included McCowin, with eight points; Dover, with eight points; Shrode, with seven points; Chewning, with five points; Haynie, with four points; sophomore point guard Harrison Meador, with three points; junior small forward CJ Gardner, with three points; and senior shooting guard Carmen Belasco, with three points.

Bullard Panthers 50, Hooks Hornets 47, FINAL

For their third contest at the Edgewood Basketball Tournament Friday, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team was slated to battle against the Hooks Hornets.

In the first quarter of play, the Panthers and the Hornets attempted to control the early momentum; however, both teams’ offensive units were matched up evenly, with Bullard and Hooks netting 12 points each.

The two teams continued to fight against their opponent for any slight offensive edge in the second quarter of play. Despite their best efforts, Bullard and Hooks remained statistically even, with both teams amassing 10 points to their total. At the halftime break, the Panthers and the Hornets were tied, 22-22.

After resuming basketball action in the second half, the Hornets soared high and stung the Panthers to take the lead in the third quarter of play, as Hooks collected 17 points, compared to the 12 points added by Bullard.

Despite trailing the Hornets entering the fourth quarter, the Panthers went on an offensive tear against their opponent, as Bullard outscored Hooks, 16-8, allowing the Panthers to claim the victory at the final buzzer, 50-47.

Once again, Hodges was the sharpshooter for the Bullard squad against Hooks, compiling a total of 15 points in the contest.

Other significant contributors for the Panthers against the Hornets included Shrode, with 13 points; McCowin, with 10 points; Dover, with eight points; and Haynie, with four points.

Bullard Panthers 60, Commerce Tigers 62, FINAL

In their final contest at the Edgewood Basketball Tournament Saturday, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team took on the Commerce Tigers.

The first quarter of the contest featured a high-scoring affair, as the two teams’ offenses were able to locate the basket with little trouble, with Commerce netting 18 points, compared to the Panthers ‘ 17 points of opening quarter offense.

In the second quarter, the Bullard squad raced ahead with a strong offensive prowl against Commerce, as the Panthers outscored the Tigers, 21-15, allowing Bullard to take a 38-33 lead over Commerce into the locker room at the halftime break.

After returning to the court for the second half of the contest, the Tigers scratched and clawed their way back into the contest in the third quarter, attacking the Panthers’ defense for 19 points, compared to Bullard’s eight points of offense.

In the fourth quarter, Bullard and Commerce traded the lead back and forth, with the contest coming down to the final shot. Despite having netted 14 points in the final frame, compared to the Tigers’ 10 points of offense, the Panthers needed one more opportunity, which was nullified by the sounding of the final buzzer, still in the hands of a Panther player, as Commerce claimed the win over Bullard, 62-60.

With a 2-2 record at the Edgewood Basketball Tournament, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team finished the event in sixth place out of 12 competing teams.

McCowin served as an offensive spark for the Panthers in the team’s contest against the Tigers, collecting a total of 18 points.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Commerce included Dover, with 14 points; Shrode, with 14 points; Haynie, with five points; Wells, with three points; Chewning, with two points; Hodges, with two points; and Belasco, with two points.

With a 2-3 record throughout last week, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team currently stands with an overall record of 3-6 on the 2017-2018 season.

Next week: Tuesday, Dec. 5 – Bullard at Emory Rains; Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 7-9 – Bullard at Great East Texas Shootout in Brownsboro.
