Panthers unable to capture wins in district games against SH, Kilgore

Prowling their way back into district play last week was the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team, as Bullard hosted a district matchup against the Spring Hill Panthers Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Bullard High School’s Panther Gymnasium.

In the first quarter of play, the two Panther teams fought tooth-and-nail in an effort to sway the game’s momentum flow to their advantage. The visiting Spring Hill squad was able to take an early lead, scoring a total of 12 points, while the home team Bullard collected six points.

The offensive units for both Bullard and Spring Hill attempted to prowl their way to success in the second quarter of play, as Bullard outscored Spring Hill, 18-14. At the halftime intermission, Spring Hill narrowly led Bullard, 26-24, as the teams left the court and headed for the locker rooms.

After making their return to the court for the second half of the district contest, Bullard once again used its strong offensive abilities to move the ball down the court efficiently and find the goal well in the third quarter of play, as Bullard scored a total of 13 points, while Spring Hill managed to collect eight points.

In the fourth quarter, the visiting Spring Hill’s squad went on an offensive prowl of their own, allowing them to mount a comeback attempt. The lead collected by Bullard was gone at the final buzzer, as Spring Hill outscored Bullard 14-5, en route to claiming the district victory, 48-42.

Leading the way in scoring for Bullard against Spring Hill was senior shooting guard Chase Chewning, collecting a total of 20 points, including five three-pointers, in the district bout.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Spring Hill included senior shooting guard Jerrod Shrode, with seven points, including two three-pointers; senior small forward Evan Hodges, with six points; sophomore center Garrett Esposito, with six points; and senior point guard Will McCowin, with three points.

With the narrow loss to the Spring Hill Panthers, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team looked to shake off the loss by continuing in district play, facing off against the Kilgore Bulldogs Friday, Feb. 2, at Kilgore High School.

In the first quarter, the game’s momentum traveled back and forth between the two teams, as home team Bulldogs collected a total of 18 points, compared to the 10 points netted by the Panthers to begin the game.

Kilgore was able to continue to locate the basket and extend their lead over Bullard in the second quarter of play, as the Bulldogs outscored the Panthers, 19-16. At the halftime break, the teams headed for their locker rooms with Kilgore holding to a 37-26 lead over Bullard.

After resuming play in the second half of the district showdown, the offensive units for both teams were able to capitalize on scoring opportunities against the opposing defenses, as Kilgore amassed a total of 22 points in the third quarter of play, compared to the 19 points added by Bullard.

In the fourth quarter, both teams attempted to pull the game in their favor, but ended up evenly matched, as the Panthers and the Bulldogs each collected a total of 17 points in the final frame.

At the final buzzer, the home team Bulldogs had used their sharp offensive bite to claim the district victory over the Panthers, 76-62.

Hodges served as the high-point leader for the Panthers in the district battle against the Bulldogs, collecting a total of 20 points, including two three-pointers.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Kilgore included Esposito, with 10 points; McCowin, with eight points; Chewning, with seven points; junior small forward CJ Gardner, with six points; Shrode, with five points; sophomore point guard Harrison Meador, with three points; and junior shooting guard Hayden Wells, with three points.

With a record of 0-2 last week, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team currently holds an overall record of 7-22, 1-6 in district play on the 2017-2018 season.
