Resuming play in their 2017-2018 schedule last week was the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team, as the team loaded the bus and traveled their way to Huntington to take part in the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, held Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 28-30, at Huntington High School.

In the first round of the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team faced off against the Aldine Mustangs.

The two teams were nearly equal in terms of offensive performance in the first quarter of play, fighting tooth-and-nail for any advantage on the scoreboard. Aldine galloped ahead to an early lead over Bullard, as the Mustangs scored a total of 12 points, while the Panthers netted 10 points.

In the second quarter of play, the Panthers and the Mustangs continued to scrap at each other, but it was Aldine who increased their lead by outscoring Bullard, 15-10. As both teams made their way inside the locker rooms, Aldine held a 27-20 advantage over Bullard.

After returning to the court for the second half of basketball action, the Panthers looked to prowl their way down the court and to offensive success in the third quarter of play; however, the team was met by a strong offensive effort by the Mustangs, as Aldine collected 22 points, while also using their defense to limit Bullard to just seven points.

In the fourth quarter, Bullard tried desperately to make up lost ground offensively, but was unable to overcome the challenge at hand, as Aldine outscored Bullard, 13-9, allowing the Mustangs to claim the win over the Panthers, 62-36.

Senior small forward Evan Hodges was the Panthers’ leader in scoring in the first round contest against the Mustangs, collecting a total of 12 points.

Other significant contributors for Bullard in the contest against Aldine included junior center Dustin Dover, with six points; sophomore point guard Harrison Meador, with five points; senior shooting guard Chase Chewning, with five points; senior shooting guard Jagger Haynie, with four points; senior shooting guard Jerrod Shrode, with two points; and junior small forward CJ Gardner, with two points.

With the loss against Aldine, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team currently holds an overall record of 5-10 on the 2017-2018 season.

Due to an early deadline because of New Year’s Day, the remainder of the games played by the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team last week will be covered in the Wednesday, Jan. 10 issue of the Bullard Banner News.
