Troup hosts softball tourney, Ladycats captures 2nd place

Troup hosted an eight-team softball tournament Thursday, through Saturday, March 9-11, and the host Lady Tigers captured second place.

Martins Mill took the team title and the Mustangs were the only team to defeat the Lady Tigers in the tournament. Troup posted a 3-2 mark in the tournament and are 7-11 for the season. Both losses were to Martins Mill.

The Lady Tigers opened District 15-3A competition Tuesday, March 14, when Troup was scheduled to host Harmony. The Lady Tigers will next play at Arp Tuesday, March 21.

Senior Drea Austin and Tayler Vance, a sophomore, were named to the All-Tournament team over the weekend. Additionally, sophomores, Hanna McCommas and Kori Minnix, each hit an out-of-the-park home run to add to their teams success. For McCommas, it was her first high school career four-bagger, and Minnix blasted her second home run.

“I am very proud of the way the girls competed over the course of the weekend. We have gotten better with every game,” said head coach Sam Weeks.

During the tournament, Troup defeated Carlisle, McLeod and LaPoynor. Weeks credited the Troup community for helping to make the tournament a success.

“Every member on our team has been a contributor to our team’s success. These young ladies are so much fun to be around and a pleasure to coach,” she said and added, “without our community we don’t have much. Our program is so very thankful for the endless support and huge aid we received with our tournament.”

Quitman placed third in the tournament, and Carlisle captured fourth place. Also named to the All-Tournament roster were Emma Parker from McLeod; Gillian Dossey from Linden Kildare; Maddy Reed from Winona; Grace Camacho and Jessie Camacho from Martins Mill; Hannah Baucom and Shelby Hayes from Quitman; Bethany Davis from LaPoynor; and Allison Gray and Haley Fears from Carlisle.

Troup 6, Carlisle 1

The Lady Tigers rallied for five runs in the fourth and final inning for a 6-1 victory over Carlisle. The home run by McCommas was a highlight for the Lady Tigers. McCommas also hit a single and drove in one run, and Renee Dennis smashed a double and drove in a pair of runs. Vance, Minnix and Emily Neel each hit a single and drove in one run, and Austin and Alyssia Hearnon each hit a single.

Vance pitched all four inning and she struck out three batters. She did not allow a walk or an earned run, and he yielded two hits, both singles.

Troup 0, Martins Mill 8

The Lady Mustangs held Troup to a pair of singles in an 8-run shutout victory. Hearnon and Austin recorded the singles for the Lady Tigers.

In the circle, Vance yielded nine hits, two walks and six earned runs. She also fanned two batters.

Troup 9, LaPoynor 2

After both teams plated a run in the first inning, Troup scored two more runs in the second frame to take a 3-1 lead. The Lady Tigers added five runs in the third inning to push the lead to 8-1. Both squads scored a run in the fourth and final inning.

Minnix sparked the offense with a home run, a double and a single. She drove in two runs and scored twice. Austin hit a single and drove in a pair of runs, and Neel smacked two singles and had one RBI. McCommas also hit a single and drove in a run.

Vance and Hearnon shared pitching duties. Vance struck out three, walked on and allowed one hit. In two innings, Hearnon struck out two, walked two and she did not allow a hit.

Troup 6, McLeon 2

The Lady Tigers needed a win to advance into the tournament championship game. Hearnon and Vance each drove in two runs to spark the offense, and Troup prevailed 6-2.

Neel ripped a pair of singles, and Hearnon and Vance each hit a single for the Lady Tigers, who plated two runs in the first inning. Troup scored another two runs in the third inning and McLeon added a run to cut the Troup lead to 4-1. Troup sustained the lead with a 2-1 edge in the fourth inning.

Vance did not yield an earned run, and she struck out four. She walked one and yielded one hit, a single.

Martins Mill 16, Troup 0

Excellent pitching by Martins Mill kept the Lady Tigers off the bases in the title game. Tiffany Lacy’s single was the only hit for Troup, although Vance, Lacy and Neel each reached via a walk.

In the circle, Vance yielded seven hits, one earned run and three walks, and she struck out two.

The Troup defense committed 10 errors in the game.
