Two killed, several injured in I-20 wreck in Van Zandt County


A total of two people, including a 20-month-old child, were killed as a result of a wreck along Interstate 20 East in Van Zandt County during the evening hours of Friday, July 7.

According to a report released by the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers responded to a three-vehicle crash on I-20, near Van on Sunday at approximately 9:53 p.m.

DPS’s preliminary crash investigation stated that a 2014 Ford F-350 truck traveling eastbound on I-20 struck the back of an eastbound 2004 Ford Taurus, causing the Taurus to crash into the back of a 2007 Audi.

The driver of the Ford Taurus, identified as Michael Shawn McGaughey, 32 of Plano, was transported to Tyler’s CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in critical condition.

Whitney Brewer McGaughey, 33, identified as a passenger in the Taurus, she was pronounced dead by Van Zandt County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Scott Shinn. Her body was taken to Hilliard Funeral Home in Van.

A 20-month-old passenger, later identified as the child of the couple, was also killed in the wreck. His body was also taken to Hilliard Funeral Home.

The driver of the Audi, identified as David Hemple, 44, of Bullard, was not injured in the crash. Several of Hemple’s passengers were transported to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler with injuries, including Alison Kravetz, 47, of Bullard, Deanne Kravetz, 79, on Conroe, and three passengers under the age of 13 years old.

The driver of the Ford F-350, identified as Terry Donte Rose, 48, of Garland, was uninjured in the wreck.
